The Classical Seat
"A GUIDE FOR THE EVERYDAY RIDER"
Duration Approx. 50 minutes

This is the first video by Sylvia Loch and forms part of a collection
of videos for the Classical Rider Classical Seat II and Classical
Seat III taking the rider from the basics to competitive riding
The essence of classical riding is being 'at one'
and in tune with the horse. It is not mystical nor complex and should
be possible for all riders if they work within simple guidelines.
Sylvia believes that we have much to learn from the riding masters
of the past. Horses have not changed since the time of Xenophon
the Greek; neither has Man. Only by forgetting the jargon and getting
back to basics can we learn to ride classically in a progressive,
structured way.
Throughout the video we see Sylvia and her pupils
working together with her different schoolmaster horses. The basic
position for the rider on an advanced horse is very nearly the same
as for the more novice horse. Certain techniques e.g. working the
horse 'deep', and encouraging lengthening through the neck are clearly
shown; as are the leg and seat aids for collection, extension and
lateral work.
The video emphasizes the idea of balance and the rider
having responsibility for his/her own weight. There is respect for
the horse's back and mouth.
This video, beautifully filmed by Charles Hodge
Photography, makes the viewer feel he is sharing in the sequences
shown. Every move, however miniscule, is sympathetically explained.
Sylvia's approach shows a refreshing lack of dogma and the viewer
is never made to feel that this way of riding is beyond the average
rider.
As the title suggests, Classical Riding is possible
for the Everyday Rider and this video is designed to further that
aim.
